Buhen
Fort Ancient Egyptian fortress site on Nile, archaeological ruins
An ancient Egyptian fortress site in Lower Nubia, Buhen was excavated for its walls and artifacts; scholars and Nile-cruise visitors study its remains and associated museum collections.
Buhen is the site of an ancient Egyptian fortress and settlement located in Lower Nubia, within present-day Sudan, positioned on the Nile near the Second Cataract. It functioned as a strategic frontier post and administrative centre controlling trade and movement along the river in antiquity.
Archaeological investigations have revealed a fortified enclosure, evidence of craft production and domestic architecture that attest to its military and economic roles. Finds from Buhen have contributed to understanding Egyptian frontier policy and Nubian interactions.
Construction and major use date to Egypt’s Middle Kingdom period when a network of fortresses was established to secure the southern border. The site’s remains record phases of occupation and fortification through later periods.
The site lies on the Nile’s riverine landscape in Lower Nubia; parts of Lower Nubia lie close to the Sudanese-Egyptian frontier and the archaeological remains are associated with the river and adjacent floodplain.
- Archaeological work: Excavations in the 20th century recovered substantial remains of mudbrick fortifications, craft areas and domestic structures, with many finds dispersed to museum collections abroad.
