Day-to-day money in Brazil revolves around Pix, the instant payment system that almost everyone uses. Tax is the part to plan: stay more than 183 days in 12 months and you become a Brazilian tax resident, taxed on worldwide income. This page explains the position as of October 2026. It is a general guide, not tax advice.
Brazilian Tax Residency#
You become a Brazilian tax resident when you have spent more than 183 days in Brazil within any 12-month period (residency starts on day 184), or immediately if you arrive on a permanent visa or a work visa tied to a Brazilian job. Residents are taxed on worldwide income.
Digital nomad visa holders paid from abroad usually become residents once they pass 183 days. Remote workers paid from abroad then pay tax monthly through the carnê-leão system and file an annual return.
Tax Rates#
Brazil’s income tax runs from 0% to 27.5%. From January 2026, monthly income up to R$5,000 is exempt, with reduced tax up to R$7,000, and a minimum tax applies to high earners. Brazil has tax treaties with around 40 countries but not the US, although US citizens can usually claim foreign tax credits. Get advice from a Brazilian accountant (contador).

Pix#
Pix is Brazil’s free, instant payment system, used for everything from rent to coconut sellers on the beach. It needs a Brazilian bank account (and so a CPF). Some international apps and services now let foreigners pay Pix QR codes from a foreign account; check what works for you. Cards are also widely accepted in cities.
ATMs and Moving Money#
ATMs from Banco24Horas, Bradesco and Banco do Brasil accept foreign cards, usually with a fee. Use ATMs inside malls, banks or supermarkets in daylight, and decline the machine’s currency conversion. Wise can send reais to Brazilian accounts via Pix.
Opening a Brazilian Bank Account#
You need a CPF, and usually a CRNM residence card. Digital banks such as Nubank and Banco Inter open accounts for foreign residents with these documents, which gives you Pix and a local card.
