Florianópolis, or Floripa, is an island city in southern Brazil with more than 40 beaches, lagoons, dunes and green hills, and one of Brazil’s biggest tech scenes. It is safer and calmer than Rio or São Paulo, with good internet, surf, kitesurfing and a relaxed outdoor lifestyle on a time zone that suits US working hours.
It is spread out, so you need a car or scooter, and it gets very busy in the Brazilian summer. This guide covers what you need to set up for a month or more. For sights as a visitor, see the Florianópolis travel guide.
Florianópolis for Digital Nomads at a Glance#
Why Floripa Works for Remote Workers#
- Beaches and nature. Surf at Campeche and Joaquina, kitesurf on the lagoon, hike to hidden beaches.
- Safer than Brazil’s big cities. Floripa has a reputation as one of Brazil’s safest state capitals.
- A tech hub. Many Brazilian startups are based here, so internet and coworking are good.
- US hours. UTC-3 is one to two hours ahead of New York.
- Quality of life. Seafood, oysters, a young population and an outdoor lifestyle.
Who It Suits (and Who It Doesn't)#
Floripa suits surfers, beach and nature lovers and people who want a calmer Brazilian base on US hours. It suits you less without a car or scooter, in the southern winter (June to August is cool and windy), or if you want big-city culture. Portuguese is essential outside the tourist bubble.
Visas#
Many passports, including the UK and EU, get 90 days visa-free. Since April 2025, US, Canadian and Australian citizens need an e-visa for short visits. Brazil’s digital nomad visa (VITEM XIV) lasts a year, renewable for another year, and needs $1,500 a month from abroad or $18,000 in the bank.

| Monthly cost | Typical range (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Furnished 1-bed apartment, monthly | $600 - $1,200 | About R$3,200-6,500 in Lagoa, Campeche or the centre; much higher from December to February |
| Bills and condo fee | $40 - $120 | Often included in monthly rentals |
| Home internet | Fibre from Claro, Vivo or local providers; usually included | |
| Coworking | $40 - $200 | Day passes about R$60-120; Sandbox plans from R$199 a month (one day a week) |
| Food (groceries plus eating out often) | $300 - $550 | Fresh seafood and por quilo restaurants |
| Transport (car, scooter or Uber) | $60 - $300 | Buses are slow; most people rent a car or scooter or use Uber |

| Gym, surf and activities | $30 - $120 | Surf lessons, kitesurfing on the lagoon, trails |
| Social life and extras | $120 - $350 | Beach bars and live music in Lagoa |
These are ballpark estimates, not quotes. Real costs vary hugely with your lifestyle, which neighbourhood you live in, how often you eat out or take taxis, the season and the exchange rate. Use them to compare places, then check current prices before you commit.
Ways to save: come between March and November, rent for three months or more, and eat at por quilo restaurants. Getting a CPF (Brazilian tax number) online makes apps and payments easier.
Where to Live#
Most nomads live in Lagoa da Conceição or in the south-east around Campeche and Rio Tavares.
| Neighbourhood | Vibe | 1-bed / month | Best for | Getting around |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lagoa da Conceição | The island's social hub by the lagoon, with bars, restaurants and dunes | $650-1,200 | Social nomads and kitesurfers | Uber or car; buses to the centre |
| Campeche and Rio Tavares | A long surf beach in the south-east, with a relaxed, outdoorsy community | $650-1,200 | Surfers and beach lovers | Car or scooter useful |
| Centro and Beira-Mar | The city side of the island, with apartment towers along the bay and shops | $550-1,000 | Convenience and services | Buses and Uber |
| Jurerê and the north | Upmarket beaches with calm water, beach clubs and holiday homes | $800-1,600 | Summer beach life | Car essential |

Monthly rentals are listed on Airbnb, QuintoAndar and in Florianópolis rental and nomad Facebook and WhatsApp groups. Check the internet speed and whether the place has parking if you rent a car.
Coworking Spaces#
Day passes cost about R$60 to R$120. Prices below are as published or recently reported.
Sandbox Coworking
A local brand with three units around the island, including Rio Tavares near Campeche and Lagoa da Conceição. Day passes can be bought at reception.
Best for: Working near the southern beaches
Cool Office Lagoa
A small coworking office in the centre of Lagoa da Conceição, bookable by the day through the Woba app.
Best for: Working in Lagoa
Cafes in Lagoa and Campeche are relaxed about laptops, and many guesthouses and coliving houses have their own workspaces.
Internet and SIM Cards#
Fibre is widely available, typically 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps in towns, slower at remote beaches. Claro, Vivo and TIM have good coverage on most of the island.
Getting Around#
The island is about 54 kilometres long, and buses are slow and indirect, so most nomads rent a car or scooter or use Uber, which is cheap. Traffic on the bridges and to the beaches is heavy in summer. The airport is in the south of the island, about 20 minutes from Campeche.
Weather and When to Go#
December to April is summer: hot, sunny and the best beach time, but crowded and expensive from Christmas to Carnival. March to May is warm and quieter. June to August is cool (10 to 20°C) and windy, good for surfers.
Community and Meeting People#
Floripa has an active nomad and startup community. Coworking events, surf and kitesurf schools, run and hiking groups, and Floripa nomad WhatsApp and Facebook groups are the easiest ways in.
Health and Safety#
Florianópolis is safer than Rio or São Paulo, but petty theft happens, especially from cars and on beaches. Don’t leave valuables in parked cars or on the sand. Private hospitals are good; carry health insurance.
