High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Southern Plains (Samtse, Sarpang, Phuentsholing)
June brings the monsoon’s arrival to the southern foothills with heavy, often all-afternoon downpours that can flood low-lying roads and make river crossings slow; daytime temperatures drop slightly to the mid-20s°C but the air is oppressively humid. Bus and taxi services to inner Bhutan may be delayed by landslips and washed-out culverts, so allow extra travel time. Many travelers avoid extended overland travel now-if you must come, expect muddy trails and switched plans.
Western Valleys (Paro, Thimphu, Haa)
May is a sweet-spot month for the western valleys: warm, sunny days-often 15-20°C-and long daylight hours make longer hikes attractive. The high passes can still hold late snow patches, so onward trekking into higher zones needs caution; early summer flowers scent the trails. Flights to Paro are generally reliable and accommodations are busying up; bring sun protection for exposed trails and a light windproof for cooler ridge afternoons.
Central Highlands (Punakha, Wangdue, Trongsa, Bumthang)
May brings steady mildness: daytime highs in the highlands reach 15-20°C in Bumthang and the lower ranges feel comfortably warm, while nights keep a chill. This window is excellent for higher-altitude day treks and for seeing the highland herding communities before the full monsoon arrives. Roads are usually in good condition, but pack a rain shell for the occasional pre-monsoon showers and keep spare days if you’re moving between valleys.
Eastern Hills (Trashigang, Mongar, Trashiyangtse)
May sees pre-monsoon humidity rise and afternoon showers begin to occur more frequently; Mongar’s surrounding ridgelines get greener and lower-altitude trails become muggy by late afternoon. Travel times lengthen slightly due to ankle-deep mud on unpaved stretches after heavy showers, so waterproof footwear is recommended. If you prefer fewer travelers and accessible culture, this month still works before the monsoon’s peak.
High Himalaya / Northern Alpine Zone (Gasa, Laya, Lunana, high passes)
May is one of the best months for high-country trekking: long daylight, warming temperatures at lower altitudes and receding snow make higher passes more negotiable before monsoon clouds arrive. Herding communities around Laya and Gasa are active and trails are vibrant with wildflowers; but afternoon thunderstorms begin to appear later in the month so plan early starts. Good fitness, proper acclimatization and a seasoned guide are essential-this is when many multi-day treks safely run.
