High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Southern Plains (Samtse, Sarpang, Phuentsholing)
The heat peaks into April and May: expect sultry, humid days regularly touching 30-34°C in the lowlands and sticky nights. This is the time the plains feel most tropical; rivers run low before the rains but humidity makes even short walks sweaty. Travel-wise, border formalities remain simple but pack sun protection, breathable clothing and insect repellent; avoid heavy packing because roadside showers may set in suddenly by late May.
Western Valleys (Paro, Thimphu, Haa)
Late April brings clear, mild days that are ideal for walking around Thimphu’s markets and hiking the lower ridgelines near Paro; daytime highs are typically in the mid to high teens °C. Rhododendrons are often in full bloom on ridge routes and the air is noticeably cleaner after winter; this window is one of the year’s best for outdoor photography and short treks. Expect more other visitors than winter but still manageable crowds at major sites.
Central Highlands (Punakha, Wangdue, Trongsa, Bumthang)
April is one of the prettiest months in central Bhutan: high valleys fill with carpets of wildflowers and clear, dry weather favors long days of walking in Bumthang and good views from Trongsa. Punakha remains warmer and slightly ahead in the growing season, making it an ideal time for river rafting lower down if you like cold-water splashes. Expect more travelers than winter but still manageable crowds; sunscreen and a warm fleece for evenings are sensible.
Eastern Hills (Trashigang, Mongar, Trashiyangtse)
April is pleasantly warm across the eastern hills with long days and clear light that show the terrain’s intricacies-Trashiyangtse’s arts and crafts villages are especially active and worth visiting. Higher passes may still hold snow pockets but most cultural sites are easily accessible. The month is good for wildlife spotting along river corridors and for cultural visits, so bring sturdy shoes and sun protection for daytime exploration.
High Himalaya / Northern Alpine Zone (Gasa, Laya, Lunana, high passes)
April opens the season in many years for cautious high-altitude travel-lower passes start to clear, and alpine meadows begin to show meltwater streams, though snow patches linger. Treks to accessible parts of Lunana and the approaches toward the Snowman can become possible with experienced guides, and yak caravans may start moving. Prepare for big daily temperature swings, carry crampons for lingering hard snow and expect basic facilities on remoter routes.
