Beshbalik
Archaeological Site Ruined Tang-era city site on the Silk Road
Beshbalik is the name of an important medieval city on routes of the Central Asian Silk Road, located in what is now northern Xinjiang, China. Its name means “Five Cities” and it was a major regional centre in the first millennium and early second millennium CE.
The settlement rose to prominence in the medieval period, serving as a political and commercial hub under successive regional powers and as a focal point for trade and cultural exchange along overland routes. Archaeological remains include traces of city walls and urban structures that reflect multiple historical phases.
Over time the city declined and was largely abandoned; the surviving ruins are studied by archaeologists interested in Silk Road urbanism and regional history. The site lies in a relatively remote area and is not a major mass-tourism destination.
Beshbalik’s ruins are located in present-day northern Xinjiang, within the administrative area around Jimsar County, and occupy a strategic position on the plains that link western and central Eurasia.
- Archaeological site: The site contains visible archaeological remains and is associated with medieval Silk Road urban development outside present-day Jimsar County in northern Xinjiang.
