Bara Imambara

Bara Imambara is a large 18th century Shia Islamic complex in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula and famous for its vast vaulted main hall and attached labyrinth. The complex functions as an imambara (congregation hall) and a prominent historical monument in the city.

The ensemble includes a vast central vaulted chamber, the Bhulbhulaiya labyrinth of upper corridors, the Asfi mosque and a stepwell; visitors commonly tour the hall and maze and view the architectural masonry. The main hall is notable for its large unsupported span and distinctive arched construction techniques.

The complex was commissioned by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784 as part of an employment project during a famine and to serve as a religious and civic monument; it remains associated with Lucknow’s Nawabi heritage. Over time the site has been preserved as a major historical attraction in the city.

Bara Imambara stands in central Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh and is a short distance from other heritage areas of the city such as Rumi Darwaza and the old city quarters.
