Bale Mountains National Park is a protected area in southeastern Ethiopia that includes a range of high-elevation habitats from afro-alpine plateaus to montane forests. The park is noted for its montane ecosystems and populations of endemic species.

Key attractions include the Sanetti Plateau, extensive upland moorland above 4,000 metres, and the Harenna Forest on the southern slopes that provides a contrasting moist forest environment. The park supports the largest known populations of the endangered Ethiopian wolf and a variety of highland-endemic plants and birds.

The park was established to conserve these highland ecosystems and its wildlife; research and conservation efforts have focused on wolf protection and habitat preservation. Visitor infrastructure is limited and oriented toward guided walks and wildlife observation.

It lies in the Oromia Region of southeastern Ethiopia, covering highland terrain that forms part of the Ethiopian Highlands.

  • Ethiopian wolf viewing: The park contains the largest remaining populations of the endangered Ethiopian wolf, best sought on the Sanetti Plateau at dawn and dusk.
  • Climate and preparation: Conditions are alpine at higher elevations and can be cold year-round; visitors should prepare for rapid weather changes and high-altitude conditions.

What to See #

  • Sanetti Plateau: The Sanetti Plateau is an extensive high-altitude plateau reaching over 4,000 metres and supports afro-alpine moorland where the endemic Ethiopian wolf is most often encountered.
  • Harenna Forest: The Harenna Forest on the southern slopes provides moist montane forest habitat distinct from the higher plateaus and supports a different assemblage of mammals and birds.
