Lake Langano Lake

Lake Langano is a freshwater lake in the Ethiopian Rift Valley region of central Ethiopia. It is known regionally as a recreational lake with shoreline resorts and beaches.

The lakeshore hosts resorts, lodges and picnic areas where people swim, boat and fish; the lake is notable in Ethiopia for being widely considered safe for bathing compared with some other Rift Valley lakes. Water-based recreation and informal birdwatching are common activities along the shore.

The lake formed within the tectonic Rift Valley system and has long been used by nearby communities for fishing and recreation. In recent decades tourist facilities have expanded along parts of the shoreline.

Lake Langano lies in the Rift Valley south of Addis Ababa within central Ethiopia, surrounded by cultivated land and Rift escarpments rather than large urban centers.

• Setting: Located in the Ethiopian Rift Valley and at accessible elevation compared with highland lakes, making it a common regional destination for weekend trips.

Langano is about 170 km south of Addis Ababa by road. The common route is via the tarmac road through Shashemene; total drive time is roughly 3-4 hours depending on traffic and stops. Some tour operators offer day-trip or overnight options from Addis Ababa.

• Stay at one of the lakeside camps or lodges that offer simple rooms and arrange boat trips to the coffee-colored shoreline.
• The water is warm and low in fish near the thermal inflows-good for a swim but check with lodge staff about safe areas.
• Combine Lake Langano with visits to the nearby Rift Valley lakes (Abijatta-Shalla, Ziway) for contrasting landscapes.
