Sof Omar Caves

Sof Omar Caves are an extensive limestone cave system in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia where the Weyib River flows through a series of tunnels and chambers. The network contains large vaulted caverns, natural bridges and passages that have local cultural and religious significance.

The caves include a sequence of dry and water-filled passages with notable large chambers sometimes referred to by guide names such as the cathedral chamber. The cave system has been used for ritual and communal purposes and is an important local pilgrimage site.

Exploration and guided visits show long subterranean passages with varied geology and river-related features; water levels can vary seasonally and some sections require caution. The caves lie in a rural karst landscape and are accessed from nearby villages.

• Large chambers and cathedral space: The so-called cathedral chamber and other large caverns that are notable for scale and echoing acoustics used historically for local gatherings and religious observance.

• Visit Sof Omar Caves during the dry season (after the main rains) when river levels are lower and the main caverns are more accessible; high flows during the rains can flood parts of the cave.
• Enter with an experienced local guide at the official cave entrance so you follow the correct route through the river passages and large halls - guides know safe routes and interpret the cave's geology and religious significance.
• Allow time to explore both the river passages and the larger cathedral‑like chambers; many day visitors only see the first section near the entrance and miss the deeper galleries further along the underground river.
