Ascension Island
Island Remote volcanic island in South Atlantic, military base present
Ascension Island in the South Atlantic hosts seabird colonies and green sea turtle nesting; diving and wartime heritage sites, plus restricted access, shape visits.
Ascension Island is a volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean that is part of a British Overseas Territory. It is small, geologically recent and was established as a strategic naval and air base during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The island contains a prominent central highland with planted woodlands and viewpoints used for hiking, along with coastal bays and limited settlements supporting military and communications facilities. It also hosts an airfield that provides strategic and logistical links in the South Atlantic.
Britain established a permanent presence on the island in the early 19th century for use as a naval station and victualling stop; later 20th-century developments added an airbase and communications installations. The island has no indigenous population and is administered as part of the wider overseas territory.
Geographically Ascension lies in the central South Atlantic, roughly midway between Africa and South America, with steep volcanic topography and a small number of settlements concentrated near sheltered harbours.
- Strategic role: Colonised for strategic use in the early 19th century and later developed as an air and naval logistics point; it remains a strategically located mid-Atlantic facility.
- Access and ecology: Supports unique introduced plantings on the highland and turtle nesting on some beaches; visitor access is tightly controlled and generally requires permission or transport on military or charter vessels.
What to See #
- Green Mountain: A broad upland rising to about 859 m that supports introduced and planted vegetation and offers extensive views across the Atlantic.
- Wideawake Airfield: A RAF-run airfield that serves as the principal air link for military and some civilian flights and supports island logistics.
- Georgetown: The principal harbour settlement and administrative focus where most services and housing for residents and station personnel are located.
Tips for Visiting Ascension Island #
- Arrange access and travel well in advance-Ascension is served by a single airfield (Wideawake) with limited military/charter flights and visitors generally need prior permission from Ascension Island authorities.
- Plan wildlife visits for the turtle-nesting season (roughly March-June) and book local guides to watch green turtles on Long Beach without disturbing nesting sites.
- Drive or hike up Green Mountain from Georgetown for a noticeably cooler microclimate and the best panoramic views of the island's interior and seabird colonies; services and fuel are concentrated around Georgetown, so plan logistics accordingly.
Best Time to Visit Ascension Island #
Go during the drier months (May-November) for calmer seas and more reliable outdoor conditions.
