How to Get to Argostoli#
Argostoli is the island capital of Kefalonia and is easiest to reach via Kefalonia International Airport (EFL) or by ferry to Poros followed by a local bus/taxi. Seasonal ferry and bus schedules matter - summer offers the most frequent connections.
Kefalonia International Airport - Anna Pollatou (EFL): The island airport is the quickest way to reach Argostoli; the airport is roughly 10-20 minutes by road from the town. Taxis from the airport to Argostoli typically take 10-20 minutes and cost around €10-€20; there are also seasonal bus services that take a similar time for a few euros.
Port of Poros (ferry from Kyllini): Mainland ferries arrive at Poros (and sometimes Pessada) on Kefalonia. The Kyllini→Poros ferry crossing is about 1.5-2 hours; ferry fares vary by season but commonly range €15-€30 for foot passengers. From Poros there are KTEL buses or taxis to Argostoli (approx 40-70 minutes depending on route and connections).
Bus: Argostoli is served by the island KTEL bus network (Argostoli central bus station). Buses run to Poros, Sami and other villages-single fares within the island are usually a few euros and journey times are typically under an hour for nearby towns.
Ferry + bus combination: Many visitors combine a ferry from Kyllini (Peloponnese) to Poros and then a KTEL bus or taxi to Argostoli; check seasonal schedules as frequencies drop in low season.
How to Get Around Argostoli#
On Kefalonia, flying into EFL or arriving by ferry then using the KTEL bus network or taxis are the standard approaches. Renting a car gives the most freedom for beaches and mountain roads, while Argostoli itself is easily seen on foot.
- Kefalonia Airport (EFL) transfers (€10-€20 (taxi)) - Quickest arrival option - short taxi rides connect the airport to Argostoli and most hotels. Book taxis in advance in high season if arriving on busy flights.
- Ferry (Kyllini → Poros / Pessada) (€15-€30) - Main sea link from western Peloponnese; ferries are frequent in summer and provide a straightforward route for car or foot passengers to Kefalonia. Combine with bus/taxi from Poros to Argostoli.
- KTEL island buses (€1.5-€6) - Public island buses link Argostoli with Poros, Sami, Lixouri and other towns. They are inexpensive and reliable in season, though less frequent off‑season.
- Taxi / private transfer (€10-€30) - Useful for door‑to‑door service, carrying luggage or early/late arrivals; taxis are common around ports and the airport but can be scarce overnight.
- Car rental (€30-€70 / day) - A car is the best way to explore Kefalonia beyond Argostoli (beaches, inland villages). Roads are narrow in places; drive carefully and book in advance in summer.
- Walking - Argostoli town centre and the waterfront are compact and pleasant on foot-ideal for exploring cafes, shops and the seafront promenade.
