Ionian Islands Subregion
The Ionian Islands are Greece's lush green west - Venetian-flavoured islands of cypress and olive groves, turquoise coves and gentle, rain-fed hills strung along the Adriatic edge.
Ionian Islands at a Glance#
The Ionians are the greenest, most Italian-influenced Greek islands - emerald hills, Venetian towns and some of the country’s most photographed beaches.
Why go / don’t miss: the Venetian Old Town of Corfu, the impossibly blue Shipwreck Beach of Zakynthos, the caves and beaches of Kefalonia, and pretty Paxos and Lefkada.
Areas: Corfu in the north; Lefkada, Kefalonia and Ithaca in the centre; and Zakynthos in the south (plus far-flung Kythira).
Getting around: fly into Corfu, Kefalonia or Zakynthos; ferries and a car link the islands.
When to go: May-Jun and Sep are ideal; July-August are hot and busy.
Where to stay: Corfu for history, Kefalonia or Zakynthos for beaches.
Dining: olive oil, kumquat and hearty Corfiot dishes like pastitsada and sofrito.
Local tips: the Ionians catch more rain than the Aegean - that’s why they’re so green.
