Ithaca is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, part of the Ionian Islands administrative region. It is traditionally identified as the legendary home of Odysseus in the Homeric epics and has a long association with Greek classical literature.

The island is relatively small and mountainous with a coastline of coves and small harbours; the main town is Vathy (also called Ithaki), which serves as the island’s principal port and administrative centre. Visitors come for coastal villages, hiking routes and cultural ties to ancient Greek literature.

Historically the island appears in classical sources and later in Venetian and Ottoman period records; modern development has been modest compared with larger Ionian islands. Local economy combines tourism, small-scale agriculture and fishing.

Ithaca lies off the northeast coast of the larger island of Kefalonia in western Greece, connected by regular ferry services to neighbouring islands and the Greek mainland.

• Visit Vathy for the main harbor life and to explore small cafés; drive inland to find quiet coves and traditional stone villages.
• Bring cash for smaller islandside shops and tavernas - card acceptance can be spotty in remote spots.
