Area de Conservación Guanacaste
Nature Reserve Extensive protected area conserving tropical dry forest biodiversity.
Guanacaste Conservation combines Pacific coastline, dry tropical forest and marine zones across northwestern Costa Rica. Travelers come for hiking trails, wildlife viewing, coastal beaches and research stations focused on terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
Area de Conservación Guanacaste is a large protected conservation unit in northwest Costa Rica that integrates multiple national parks and reserves to conserve a continuous corridor from Pacific coastal habitats up to high-elevation cloud forests. It protects a wide range of tropical ecosystems and associated biodiversity.
The overall property links lowland tropical dry forest, rain forest and montane cloud forest across an elevational gradient, enabling species migrations and protecting endemic and threatened species. It includes restored landscapes, ranger stations and visitor trails across different sectors.
The conservation area was assembled through successive expansions and the integration of existing national parks and reserves to create a connected protected corridor. Management has emphasised ecological restoration, rewilding and conservation science.
The area lies in Guanacaste Province in north-western Costa Rica, with access points and visitor facilities near regional towns and cities including Liberia; different sectors spread across the provincial landscape from the Pacific plain into higher interior ranges.
- Size and habitats: The conservation area covers roughly 147,000 hectares and combines dry forest, rainforest and marine sectors to protect a wide elevational gradient and species migrations.
- Seasonal note: Different sectors are best visited at different times of year - the dry forest has distinct wet and dry seasons, so wildlife viewing often improves during transition months.
What to See #
- Protected parks and reserves network: A network of protected terrestrial and marine units including national parks, biological reserves and coastal sectors that together conserve tropical dry forest, rainforest and marine habitats.
- Conservation and research sites: Restoration and ecological research stations associated with reforestation and species recovery projects spanning lowland dry forest to cloud forest zones.
