Miravalles Volcano

Miravalles is a volcano in the Guanacaste Province of northwestern Costa Rica, known for pronounced geothermal activity including fumaroles and hot springs. The edifice is a complex stratovolcanic system with a large central caldera and multiple vents.

The area around Miravalles is exploited for geothermal power generation, with infrastructure and wells developed to harness subsurface heat. The volcano is monitored for seismicity and hydrothermal activity rather than frequent large magmatic eruptions.

Miravalles sits inland in Guanacaste Province amid a volcanic and mountainous landscape characteristic of northwestern Costa Rica. It is part of the region’s volcanic chain and is reached by road from nearby towns and provincial centers.
