Aqueduct of Valens Historical Site

The Aqueduct of Valens is a Roman aqueduct in Istanbul on the European side of the city, originally constructed in the late 4th century under Emperor Valens. It was a major component of the water supply system for Constantinople.

Large, stone-built sections remain standing in the historic area and form a long arched bridge that once carried water across a valley. The most visible surviving stretch runs through the central districts and is a conspicuous linear ruin several hundred metres long.

Construction was undertaken under the Roman emperor Valens in the late 4th century to bring water into Constantinople; the aqueduct formed part of a wider system of channels and reservoirs that tapped springs in the surrounding countryside. It continued to be repaired and used through Byzantine and Ottoman periods as part of the city’s water infrastructure.

The monument sits on the European side of Istanbul in the historic city area, crossing a shallow valley between the hills of the old city. It is within walking distance of other central historic districts and is embedded in the modern urban street plan.

• Visibility: The surviving stone section is a prominent landmark visible from streets in central Istanbul and is integrated into the modern urban fabric.
• Best time to visit: Early morning and late afternoon light give the best photographic contrast on the masonry; the structure is often photographed from nearby avenues and viewpoints on the European side.

Located in the Fatih district, the aqueduct is near Saraçhane and accessible on foot from Taksim (about a 20-30 minute walk) or by tram to Laleli-Üniversite or tramway stops. Numerous buses and the metro serve the wider area.

• The aqueduct is visible from public streets and requires no admission - visit in the evening when the city's lights make its arches glow.
• Combine the visit with a walk down Atatürk Boulevard and a detour to the nearby Taksim area for transit connections.
• Look for Roman spolia and Ottoman repairs in the masonry - the structure shows centuries of adaptation.
