The Amphiareion of Oropos is an ancient sanctuary in the Oropos region of Attica dedicated to the hero-seer Amphiaraos, used in classical and Hellenistic antiquity as an oracle and healing center. The site contains architectural and cultic remains that reflect its role as a regional pilgrimage destination.
Excavated remains include the foundations of a temple to Amphiaraos, a small theatre for ritual performances, stoas and votive deposits, together with rock-cut features and a spring associated with healing rites. Pilgrims consulted the oracle and used the sanctuary’s facilities for incubation and ritual purification.
The sanctuary developed from the Archaic and classical periods into the Hellenistic era; it operated as a notable local cult site rather than a pan-Hellenic sanctuary and shows continuity of use into the Roman period.
Geographically it sits near the town of Oropos on the coastal plain at the northern edge of Attica, on the slopes below nearby hills and close to the Euboean Gulf coastline.

How to Get to Amphiareion of Oropos #
From Athens, drive along the EO1/E75 toward Chalkida then take the coastal route toward Oropos (about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic). The sanctuary is signposted from Oropos; limited regional buses serve Oropos from Athens and from nearby towns, but a car or taxi is the most convenient option.
