Parnitha National Park National Park

Parnitha National Park is a protected area covering Mount Parnitha north of the Athens metropolitan area in Attica, preserving montane forests and natural habitats rising above the city. The mountain’s highest elevations reach roughly 1,400 meters.

Trails and forest roads provide opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and wildlife observation within a relatively short distance from Athens. Scenic viewpoints near the ridge offer panoramic views over the plains and the city below.

The area has long been used for timber and pastoral activities and was later designated for protection to conserve its forests and biodiversity; recent decades have seen active management and restoration following wildfire events. The park contains recreational facilities and trail networks developed for public use.

Mount Parnitha sits immediately north of the greater Athens area in the Attica region, forming the principal forested massif that separates the city from the northern plains and neighboring lowlands.

• Proximity to Athens: It is the nearest large protected mountain area to the Athens urban area, making it a frequent day-trip destination for city residents.
• Wildfire impact: Significant wildfires have affected the mountain in recent decades, altering forest cover in parts of the park and influencing trail access at times.

Parnitha National Park is about 30-40 km north‑west of Athens. From Athens, take the E75/National Road toward Thiva and follow signs for the park; there are several access points, with main entrances near Ano Liosia and Thrakomakedones. Driving is the most practical option; some guided trips and local buses serve nearby towns.

• Drive early on weekends to avoid Athenian day‑trippers who arrive mid-morning.
• Take the cable car from the parking area near the main monastery if one is operating; it provides easier access to some upper trails.
• Pack layers-the summit is often significantly cooler than Athens and can be windy even in summer.
