About Parnitha#
Mount Parnitha is the highest mountain of the Attica region in Greece, forming a wooded range immediately north of Athens and rising to roughly 1,400 meters. It is protected as a national park and is the largest green area directly adjacent to the Athens metropolitan region.
The area is visited for its network of marked hiking and mountain-biking trails, picnic areas and viewpoints that offer panoramic views across the Athens basin and the Saronic Gulf. Several short paved roads and car parks give access to high points and trailheads, and there are mountain lodges and day-use recreation sites scattered around the massif.
Parnitha was designated for protection to conserve its pine and fir forests and the wildlife they support; over the 20th and 21st centuries the area has been used for recreation, forestry and limited tourism development. A large wildfire in 2007 burned extensive tracts of forest and led to major restoration and fire-management efforts since then.
The mountain sits immediately north of central Athens, within the Attica region, forming a forested ridge that separates the Athens plain from the interior. Travel time from Athens city center is typically under an hour by car, depending on traffic, and routes approach the range from the east and south.
- 2007 wildfire: A large portion of the mountain was severely damaged by a major wildfire in 2007; recovery is ongoing and some tracks remain closed or re-routed.
- Summit facilities: There is a casino and tourist facilities near the summit area on the eastern side, which are often used as a base for short visits and viewpoints over Athens.
How to Get to Parnitha#
Mount Parnitha (Parnitha National Park) lies north of Athens and is commonly reached by car from the Athens urban area - it is roughly 25-40 km from central Athens depending on which part of the mountain you go to, so expect about a 40-60 minute drive in typical traffic to main trailheads and the national park facilities. There is parking at several trailheads and at the summit area (depending on access restrictions).
Public transport and specific bus numbers vary by route and season; when using public transit, head to northern Athens suburbs (Kifissia/Marousi areas) and change for local buses or taxis that serve the park entrances.
Tips for Visiting Parnitha#
- Go early in the day on weekdays to escape weekend crowds from Athens and to enjoy cooler, clearer air on forest roads and summit viewpoints.
- If you want high-altitude views without a long hike, drive toward the Mont Parnes/ casino area on the mountain plateau - it's a common short-access spot used by locals and visitors for panoramas of the plain below.
- Before visiting in summer, check local fire warnings and park access notices: Parnitha is prone to wildfires and some forest roads or trails may be closed during high-risk periods.
