Mount Pentelicus Mountain
Athens-adjacent mountain famed for ancient Pentelic marble quarries
Pentelicus (Penteli) rises northeast of Athens and supplied the marble for ancient monuments; visitors hike quarry paths, see carved marble outcrops and take wide views over Attica.
Mount Pentelicus (Pendeli) is a mountain northeast of Athens in the Attica region, rising to about 1,109 meters above sea level. It is best known historically as the source of Pentelic marble used extensively in ancient Athenian buildings and sculpture.
The mountain’s slopes contain extensive ancient and modern quarries that provided the fine white marble for the Parthenon and other structures on the Acropolis. The stone’s quality and proximity to Athens made it a primary material for Classical builders and sculptors.
Quarrying and landscape changes from ancient through modern times have altered parts of the mountain, and some monastic and historical sites also occupy its slopes. The mountain remains visible from Athens and forms part of the region’s northeast natural boundary.
Mount Pentelicus sits roughly 15 to 20 kilometers northeast of central Athens, forming a wooded ridge between the city and the Marathon plain.
- Marble characteristic: The mountain's marble is noted for its uniform white color with a faint golden patina that appears after exposure, prized in ancient Athenian sculpture and architecture.
What to See#
- Pentelic marble quarries: Pentelic marble quarries on the mountain's slopes supplied large quantities of the fine white marble used in Classical Athens, including for the Parthenon and other monuments.
