Adulis
Archaeological Site Ancient Red Sea port with archaeological ruins
Adulis preserves ruins of an ancient Red Sea port near Zula; archaeologists and history-minded visitors examine Aksumite-era remains, pottery fragments, and coastal archaeological trenches.
Adulis is the archaeological remains of an ancient Red Sea port on Eritrea’s coast, associated with the Aksumite period and earlier maritime trade. The site is an important source of material evidence for commerce between the Horn of Africa, Arabia and the wider Indian Ocean in late antiquity and the early medieval period.
Visitors encounter exposed ruins and scatterings of pottery, amphorae and structural remains rather than a large preserved monument; the visible remains reflect the site’s role as a trading port. There are no extensive visitor facilities on site, so visits are typically short and require a guide or transport from the coastal road.
Adulis served as a major port for the Kingdom of Aksum and earlier polities, flourishing especially from the first centuries CE into the early medieval period. Excavations in the 20th century recovered imported ceramics, glass and other trade goods that document its role in regional and long-distance commerce.
The site lies on Eritrea’s Red Sea coast in the Northern Red Sea region near small coastal settlements and road connections; it is east of the Eritrean highlands and faces the Red Sea shipping lanes.
- Archaeological finds: Artifacts from the site, including distinctive statuettes and imported pottery, were recovered during 20th century excavations and are important for understanding Red Sea trade networks.
- Visitor access: The site is exposed and has limited visitor facilities, so visits are usually brief and require arranging transport from the coastal road.
