How to Get to Aceitunas#
Aceitunas is a barrio of Moca, Puerto Rico, and is best reached by road after flying into Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN) or Luis Muñoz Marín (SJU). There are no passenger rail links for this region, so drive, taxi or limited bus services are used to complete the journey.
Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN) / Aguadilla or Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU): Moca (and its barrios such as Aceitunas) is in northwest Puerto Rico; Rafael Hernández (BQN) in Aguadilla is the closest major airport (about 20-40 minutes by road), while SJU in San Juan is further (1.5-2 hours). From either airport you can take a taxi, rental car, or intercity bus to Moca.
Smaller regional flights: There are no scheduled flights directly into Moca; overland travel from BQN or SJU is required.
Bus: Puerto Rico’s public bus network (AMA) is limited for intercity travel; most visitors use intercity buses, private shuttles or rental cars. From Aguadilla/BQN there are local buses and shared taxi services to Moca, but schedules are limited-car or taxi is usually more practical.
Train: Puerto Rico does not have an island-wide passenger rail system for these routes; road transport is the standard way to reach Moca and surrounding barrios.
How to Get Around Aceitunas#
Road transport is the practical way to reach and move around Moca and its barrios: renting a car is the most convenient option, taxis and limited intercity bus/van services are alternatives. There is no regular passenger rail service for this part of Puerto Rico.
- Car hire (US$30+/day) - Renting a car is the most practical way to visit Moca and its barrios; driving from BQN to Moca takes about 20-40 minutes depending on exact location. A car gives you the freedom to reach rural neighbourhoods and beaches on your own schedule; check rental requirements and insurance.
- Taxi / private transfer (US$20-70 depending on origin) - Taxis and pre-booked transfers from BQN or SJU provide a direct door-to-door option and are useful if you don’t want to drive. Fares depend on distance-short rides from Aguadilla run under US$50-so confirm price in advance. Taxis are reliable for arrivals outside bus hours.
- Local buses / shared vans (Low (USD amounts)) - There are some local buses and shared van services in northwest Puerto Rico linking Aguadilla, Isabela and Moca, but schedules are limited and services can be slow. They are the cheapest option but less convenient with luggage or irregular hours; check local timetables and connection points in advance.
- Motorbike / scooter rental (Low-moderate (USD/day)) - Scooters can be rented in tourist hubs for short hops and are convenient on light-traffic rural roads. They are less suitable for rainy conditions or for extended luggage; helmets are mandatory and local road rules apply. Useful for short daytime errands around town.
- Bicycle (Low (USD/day)) - Bicycling is an option for short, local journeys in and around Moca but terrain can be hilly. Use for short errands and exploring the town; avoid major highways. Carry water and wear visible clothing for road safety.
- Walking - Walking is practical within Moca’s centre and for nearby errands; barrios like Aceitunas are walkable for short distances but reaching other towns will require transport. Use daylight hours and standard personal safety precautions.
