Zambezi Valley & Victoria Falls (northwest)
Low humidity and pleasantly warm days continue into August, which is one of the most popular months to visit the Zambezi Valley for game and falls viewing. Cooler mornings require a fleece for early game drives while afternoons are ideal for walking the cataracts or visiting local craft markets in Victoria Falls town. With clear air and steady conditions, scenic flights and sunset cruises are very reliable activities at this time.
Eastern Highlands (Mutare, Nyanga, Chimanimani)
August continues the cool, dry spell with clear azure skies and good trekking conditions; afternoon temperatures are comfortable for long hikes and the air is noticeably crisp. Local guesthouses and mountain huts tend to book up at weekends, so reserve ahead if you want to stay near Nyanga or the Chimanimani ranges. Streams are lower but still flowing, and wildflower displays begin earlier in sheltered valleys.
Central Plateau & Harare-Masvingo (Highveld)
August begins a slow warm-up while remaining dry, and daytime temperatures become increasingly comfortable for touring. Road dust increases but the firm ground is favourable for overland travel and walking in lowland reserves; accommodation around historical sites can fill at weekends, so book ahead. Expect warm afternoons and cool nights - a light jacket for evenings will suffice.
Matabeleland & Western Highlands (Bulawayo, Matobo, Hwange fringe)
August sees a slow warming as the dry season loosens its grip, producing comfortable days well-suited to long hikes and game drives. Dust can be present on safari tracks, but the clear light and visibility reward photographers in Hwange’s western reaches. As midday heat rises, plan strenuous activities for mornings and late afternoons and keep water plentiful.
Lowveld & Gonarezhou/Beitbridge (southeast and far south)
August remains dry and increasingly warm by day, with animals still drawn to permanent water and game-viewing strong in reserves. This is peak safari season for many visitors seeking concentrated wildlife sightings and clear skies; lodge capacity often fills, so pre-booking is advisable. Midday heat increases later in the month; schedule strenuous activities for the morning or late afternoon.
