Zambezi Valley & Victoria Falls (northwest)

April brings the peak of river flow after the rainy season, with the Zambezi at its most ferocious and the Victoria Falls putting out enormous spray that can envelop viewpoints. This is one of the best months to feel the full force of the falls; however, many low-lying river activities are adjusted or suspended while guides assess safety. Temperatures start to moderate compared with mid-summer, mornings and evenings feel fresher, and safari roads begin to dry.

Eastern Highlands (Mutare, Nyanga, Chimanimani)

April brings drier spells and sharper mornings as the regional rains ease; river levels remain strong and waterfalls continue to impress. Hiking becomes more dependable as trails dry out, and the highland ridgelines offer crisp air and clear views on settled days - pack layers for chilly starts. Spring wildflowers and new grasses appear, making this a fine month for photography and long day-walks without the mid-summer heat.

Central Plateau & Harare-Masvingo (Highveld)

April’s mornings are crisp and the wet season eases, leaving afternoons pleasantly warm and drier. This transition month is excellent for visiting ruins and national monuments because the dust has settled and vegetation is colorful without mid-summer humidity. Roads improve quickly after April, and wildlife sightings in smaller reserves can be good as animals exploit permanent water sources.

Matabeleland & Western Highlands (Bulawayo, Matobo, Hwange fringe)

April brings cooler mornings and drier days, improving conditions for walking among Matobo’s balancing rocks and granite kopjes. Waterfalls fed by the summer rains may still be flowing in sheltered valleys, and this shoulder period is comfortable for both cultural sites and short safaris. Road reliability improves and game tends to concentrate more at permanent springs and pans on the western savanna.

Lowveld & Gonarezhou/Beitbridge (southeast and far south)

April sees a transition to drier weather; river levels drop from their peak but remain strong enough for dramatic gorge scenery and vibrant birdlife. Gonarezhou’s landscape is striking, and the drop in humidity makes walking and game drives much more comfortable than in earlier months. Mosquito numbers fall as pools drain, but malaria risk can persist into the shoulder months so keep precautions in place.
