Yushima Seidō is a Confucian temple and former academy in the Yushima area of Bunkyo, central Tokyo. It is a surviving urban example of Edo-period Confucian institutions in Tokyo.
The complex contains a principal wooden hall used for ritual and commemorative functions and smaller subsidiary structures. The site is visited for its architectural features and its connections to education and Confucian scholarship in the city.
The temple complex was established in the Edo period as a center for Confucian study and ritual and has been rebuilt and repaired at various times since then. It served historically as an official place of learning under Tokugawa administration and later retained a cultural and ceremonial role in Tokyo.
The temple sits in the Yushima neighborhood of Bunkyo, close to the Ueno and Ochanomizu areas of central Tokyo. It is within Tokyo’s inner urban area and is easily reached by Tokyo Metro.
