Yuriev Monastery

Yuriev Monastery is an Orthodox monastic complex near Veliky Novgorod in Novgorod Oblast, Russia, founded in 1030 and counted among the country’s oldest monastic institutions.

The site is notable for its early medieval stone church, with the present St George’s Cathedral dating to 1119, original masonry and historic church art. The complex also contains monastic buildings, courtyards and the precinct that reflect medieval ecclesiastical architecture.

The monastery was founded in 1030 by Yaroslav the Wise as a religious and defensive foundation and served as an important ecclesiastical center for the Novgorod region. The cathedral and surrounding structures date mainly to the 12th century, with later additions and periods of repair and restoration.

The monastery stands on the banks of the Volkhov River near Veliky Novgorod in Novgorod Oblast, accessible from the city by road and visited as part of the Novgorod historical ensemble.
