The Millennium of Russia is a large bronze monument in Veliky Novgorod, Russia, erected in 1862 to commemorate a thousand years since the traditional founding date of the Russian state. It is one of the city’s principal civic monuments.
The monument comprises a tiered pedestal and numerous sculpted figures representing monarchs, military leaders and cultural figures from Russian history; it is located in the central Cathedral Square near Saint Sophia Cathedral. It is a frequent focal point for visitors to the historic centre.
Commissioned and unveiled in the 19th century, the monument reflects national historical themes as interpreted at that time and has been a landmark of Novgorod since its installation. It has remained in Cathedral Square through subsequent political changes.
