Rurikovo Gorodische

Rurikovo Gorodische is an archaeological and historic settlement site on the right bank of the Volkhov River near Veliky Novgorod in northwestern Russia. It is traditionally associated with the early medieval fortified settlement that preceded the growth of Novgorod.

Visitors see exposed earthworks, foundation remains and a small museum that displays finds from excavations; the site preserves traces of wooden and earthen fortifications rather than large standing stone architecture. Walkways and interpretive panels explain the layout of the former settlement and its archaeological phases.

Archaeological evidence dates occupation of the site to the early medieval period; in local tradition it is linked to the Varangian leader Rurik and the formative era of Novgorod. Over centuries the locus of political and commercial activity moved across the river to the later Novgorod Kremlin and market quarter.

The site sits immediately across the Volkhov River from central Veliky Novgorod in Novgorod Oblast, on a promontory that commands the river route and the approaches to the later medieval city.

Rurikovo Gorodische (the Rurik settlement mound) lies immediately adjacent to Veliky Novgorod. From Veliky Novgorod city centre / the Kremlin area it is a short taxi ride or roughly a 20-30 minute walk across the riverbank paths to the archaeological site. Local buses and taxis from the city’s railway and bus stations serve the route to the site; follow local signs for Rurikovo Gorodische.

• Visit in the morning for the best light on the river and Kremlin across the water-Rurikovo Gorodische provides one of the classic panoramic views of Veliky Novgorod and St. Sophia Cathedral.
• Combine your stop with the Novgorod State Museum Reserve so you can join a guided tour or pick up interpretive materials; the archaeological mound itself is best appreciated with context from the museum displays.
• Walk the riverside paths around the site rather than just viewing from the road; small information panels and vantage points close to the mound are easily missed by visitors who only stop briefly.
