How to Get to Yomala

Jomala (Yomala) on Åland is easiest to reach via Mariehamn Airport (MHQ) or by ferry from mainland Finland or Sweden to Mariehamn. There's no rail on Åland - travellers commonly combine a VR train to Turku with a ferry to Mariehamn, or arrive by air into MHQ.

By Air

Mariehamn Airport (MHQ): Mariehamn is Åland’s main airport and the closest air gateway to Jomala/Yomala; it’s only a short drive from most parts of Jomala (10-20 minutes). Local taxis typically cost around €10-20 to central Jomala/Mairiehamn, and there are occasional bus connections between the airport and Mariehamn centre (fares around €1.50-3).

By Train & Bus

Train: Åland has no rail network. The usual overland+sea route from mainland Finland is to take a VR train to Turku (Turku Central), then a ferry to Mariehamn.

Bus / Ferry: Ferries from Turku (operator examples: Viking Line, Wasaline/Tallink) run to Mariehamn; sailing times vary (typically 5-6 hours from Turku, overnight options from Stockholm). Foot-passenger ferry fares commonly start from roughly €25-€60 depending on season and whether you take a cabin. On Åland itself, local buses are run by Ålandstrafiken - typical single fares in Mariehamn/Jomala are around €1.50-3 and journeys within the island are short (10-30 minutes).
