Yasuní National Park

Yasuní National Park is a large protected area in Ecuador’s Amazon basin that conserves lowland rainforest, extensive river systems, and exceptional biological diversity. It is widely recognised for its high concentrations of plant and animal species and for preserving intact primary forest.

The park offers research stations and guided ecotourism opportunities that focus on wildlife viewing, river excursions and rainforest walks; access is controlled and often coordinated through park authorities or authorised tour operators. The landscape includes terra firme forest, seasonally flooded areas and extensive indigenous lands within the park boundaries.

Yasuní has long been the focus of conservation attention because of its biodiversity values and cultural importance to indigenous peoples of the Amazon. Management combines national protected-area regulations with collaborative initiatives involving communities and researchers.

Geographically Yasuní lies in eastern Ecuador within the Amazon lowlands (Napo and Orellana provinces nearby); it is remote from major cities and typically reached by river and air transfers from regional gateways.

• UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the park protects western Amazon lowland rainforest with exceptional species richness and many endemic plants and animals.
• Indigenous territories and access: The park includes indigenous territories and is home to several indigenous peoples; access to some areas is restricted and visits are usually arranged through authorised guides and research stations.

Yasuní National Park is in Ecuador’s Amazon and is not reachable by road from the highlands. Typical access is via a flight to the Amazon gateway town of Coca (Puerto Francisco de Orellana) followed by riverboat travel upriver or by chartered small plane to jungle lodges. Access logistics (boat times, permits, guided arrangement) should be arranged in advance through an authorized operator based in Coca or Quito.

Because Yasuní is remote and access routes vary by lodge, visitors should plan travel and transfers with a tour operator; there are no regular road links from the Andean cities directly into the park.

• Arrange travel and a lodge or authorized guide out of Coca in advance; most access is by river and community-run lodges control who reaches the park's interior.
• Aim for very early morning and late-afternoon river excursions-those windows consistently produce the most wildlife activity; many day trips concentrate on the main Napo river, while quieter tributaries hold richer sightings.
• If your plan includes the Tiputini sector or research stations, secure permits/arrangements well ahead-these deeper sectors are much less visited but require authorization and a pre-booked guide or lodge.
