About Yasukuni Shrine#
Yasukuni Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Chiyoda, Tokyo, established in 1869 to commemorate those who died in service of Japan. It functions both as a religious site and as a location for commemoration.
The shrine was established in the early Meiji period to consolidate memorial rites for war dead and has been maintained since as a national memorial site. Over time the site has grown to include museum and commemorative facilities as part of its function.
Yasukuni Shrine is located in central Tokyo’s Chiyoda ward, within the dense urban area of the city and accessible by Tokyo’s public transport network.
- Function and museum: Founded in the late 19th century, the shrine commemorates those who died in service of Japan and is an active place of Shinto worship; the on-site museum presents historical exhibits related to Japan’s military history.
What to See#
- Yushukan museum: The Yushukan museum adjacent to the shrine complex, which displays military artefacts and historical materials related to those commemorated at the shrine.
How to Get to Yasukuni Shrine#
Yasukuni Shrine is in Chiyoda, Tokyo. The best public transport access is Kudanshita Station (served by Tokyo Metro Tozai and Hanzomon lines plus the Toei Shinjuku line); from Kudanshita it’s about a 5-10 minute walk to the shrine. The shrine is also reachable by taxi from major hubs like Tokyo Station in around 10-15 minutes depending on traffic.
Tips for Visiting Yasukuni Shrine#
- Use Kudanshita Station as the most convenient metro access point and walk through Kitanomaru Park for a quieter approach to the shrine grounds.
- If you want to view the onsite museum (Yūshūkan) as well, check its opening hours before you go-many visitors see only the torii and grounds and miss the museum exhibitions on site.
- Be aware the shrine is politically sensitive; expect visitors and occasional protests on certain anniversaries, so plan weekday or early-morning visits if you prefer less crowded, lower-profile times.
Best Time to Visit Yasukuni Shrine#
For Yasukuni Shrine, spring (cherry blossom) and autumn (foliage) are the most scenic times-expect large crowds in spring and somewhat fewer visitors in autumn.
