How to Get to Yangquan
Yangquan is best reached by rail from nearby Taiyuan or by a car/taxi transfer from Taiyuan Wusu International Airport (TYN). The city has a high‑speed stop at Yangquan North and conventional services at Yangquan Railway Station; there are also intercity coaches linking to Taiyuan and other Shanxi cities.
Taiyuan Wusu International Airport (TYN): The closest major airport is Taiyuan Wusu (about 70-90 km from Yangquan city centre). From the airport you can take the airport shuttle to Taiyuan city (approx. 40-50 minutes, CNY 20-30) then a high‑speed or regular train to Yangquan North (see train card). A direct taxi or Didi to Yangquan takes roughly 70-100 minutes depending on traffic and costs roughly CNY 200-350.
Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport (SJW) / Beijing (PEK/Daxing DAX): If you arrive at Shijiazhuang or Beijing airports you will have longer transfers: expect 2.5-4+ hours total travel. From Shijiazhuang you can take a high‑speed train to Taiyuan or transfer via Taiyuan to reach Yangquan (train fares vary - see train card); taxis/Didi from Shijiazhuang to Yangquan are uncommon for such distances (costs several hundred CNY). From Beijing, take a high‑speed train from Beijing South to Taiyuan or to cities on the Beijing-Taiyuan corridor, then transfer to Yangquan (total journey often 3.5-5 hours).
Train: Yangquan is served by Yangquan North (阳泉北) station for high‑speed services and the older Yangquan Railway Station (阳泉站) for conventional trains. High‑speed services from Taiyuan to Yangquan North take around 20-40 minutes; prices vary by train class (cheap fast trains often CNY ~15-50). Regular trains from Beijing, Shijiazhuang or Taiyuan take longer but are frequent - check China Railway (12306) for exact times and fares.
Bus / Coach: Long‑distance coaches run to and from Taiyuan, Shijiazhuang and nearby Shanxi cities from Yangquan long‑distance bus stations (commonly called 阳泉客运站). Journeys to Taiyuan take roughly 1-1.5 hours; fares are typically lower than trains (often CNY 20-60 depending on distance and service). Local city buses connect neighbourhoods within Yangquan for very low fares (see Getting Around).
How to Get Around Yangquan
Yangquan is easiest to navigate by short high‑speed rail hops and taxis/Didi within the city. For most visitors the best approach is to arrive at Taiyuan Wusu Airport or Taiyuan railway hub and transfer by train or car to Yangquan, then use taxis, local buses and shared bikes for day‑to‑day getting around.
- Local bus (CNY 1-3) - Local buses cover most of Yangquan's urban area and are the cheapest way to get around for short trips. Routes converge on major hubs like the city centre and bus terminals; services are frequent during the day but can be confusing for non‑Chinese speakers. Bring exact change or a transit card if available.
- Taxi / Didi (CNY 8-60+) - Metered taxis and ride‑hail (Didi) are the most convenient way to move around the city, especially if you have luggage or are short on time. Expect fast pickups in central districts; fares start with a small flag‑fall then ~CNY 2-3 per kilometre depending on the operator. Late‑night surcharges may apply.
- Intercity train (CNY 15-150) - Use Yangquan North (阳泉北) for the fastest intercity connections - short high‑speed hops to Taiyuan and onward links to Beijing and Shijiazhuang. Trains are punctual and comfortable; buy tickets in advance on 12306.cn or via an app. Prices vary by class and distance but are generally economical compared with road coaches.
- Long‑distance coach (CNY 20-100) - Coaches connect Yangquan with nearby Shanxi cities and provincial hubs at multiple daily departure times. They are often cheaper than trains for some routes, and useful when direct train times are inconvenient. Travel times depend on traffic and route - allow extra time during holidays.
- Bicycle / Shared bike (CNY 1-3 per 30 min) - Shared bikes are common in many Chinese cities and convenient for short trips in Yangquan's flatter central districts. They're cheap and a good way to explore neighbourhoods at street level; watch for local parking rules and use the official apps to unlock bikes.
- Walking - Central Yangquan is compact enough for comfortable walking between sights, restaurants and shops. Walking is often the fastest way to navigate short distances and discover neighbourhoods; wear sensible shoes and be prepared for hot summers or cold winters.
