Yakushi-ji Temple

Yakushi-ji Temple is an important Nara-period Buddhist temple in the city of Nara, Nara Prefecture, Japan, originally founded in the late 7th century and dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha. The complex is one of the major ancient temples in Nara and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the city’s historic monuments.

Architectural highlights include the twin pagodas flanking the central axis and the main hall that enshrines the temple’s principal image. The East Pagoda in particular is recognized as a National Treasure and the layout exemplifies classical Nara-period temple planning.
