Kōfuku-ji Temple

Kōfuku-ji is a major Buddhist temple complex in Nara city, Nara Prefecture, Japan, originally established in the 7th century and long associated with the powerful Fujiwara family. The complex is one of Nara’s principal historic temples and contains several important buildings and cultural treasures.

Kōfuku‑ji sits inside Nara city beside Nara Park. It is about a 5-10 minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station and roughly a 15-20 minute walk from JR Nara Station. From Kyoto or Osaka take a Kintetsu or JR train to Nara, then follow pedestrian signs through Nara Park to the temple.

• Go very early (before most tour groups arrive) to enjoy clearer views of the five‑story pagoda and calmer encounters with the freely roaming deer in Nara Park.
• Use Kintetsu Nara Station as your entry point when possible-it's the shortest walk to Kōfuku‑ji and convenient if you want to combine the temple with nearby Nara Park sights.
• Don't skip the Kōfuku‑ji National Treasure Hall and the smaller halls behind the main courtyard; they house important Buddhist sculptures that many passersby miss.
