Gangō-ji Temple Religious Site

Gangō-ji Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple complex in Nara Prefecture that dates back to Japan’s early classical period and is one of the city’s historically important temples. It is part of the cluster of monuments that reflect Nara’s standing as Japan’s capital in the 8th century.

Visitors can see archaeological remains, later-period temple buildings and museum displays that explain the site’s development and material culture. The complex occupies two historic precincts with foundations and surviving fabric that illustrate temple layout and construction techniques.

Gangō-ji was established in the Asuka-Nara era and developed as a major religious institution during the period when Nara served as the imperial capital. Over centuries the temple complex was rebuilt multiple times after fires and shifts in political and religious patronage.
