Yagul
Nature Reserve Pre-Columbian Zapotec archaeological site near Oaxaca
A fortified Zapotec site above the Oaxaca Valley, Yagul features terraces, a ballcourt and a palace; visitors come for archaeology, hilltop views and regional history.
Yagul is a pre-Columbian archaeological site in the Tlacolula Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, notable for its hilltop citadel, palace complex and ceremonial architecture. It is an important regional center of the Valley of Oaxaca archaeological landscape.
The site’s most visible features include a long enclosed ballcourt, an extended plaza framed by buildings and a fortified ridge that served defensive and ceremonial roles. The palace complex contains multiple rooms and courtyards arranged on terraces immediately below the citadel.
Excavations and study identify Yagul as a regional center built and occupied by the indigenous peoples of the Oaxaca valleys; its architecture shows sequential construction and re-use across pre-Hispanic periods. Over time the site developed defensive works on the summit and expanded residential and administrative structures along the slopes.
Yagul sits in the Tlacolula Valley near the town of Tlacolula de Matamoros and the better-known site of Mitla, within the central valleys region of the state of Oaxaca. The site is reached by road from the valley towns and lies on a rocky ridge overlooking agricultural terraces and valley plains.
- Best viewpoints: The ballcourt and the hilltop fortifications offer the clearest views of the site's layout and are good photo points from elevated walkways.
- On-site museum: A small on‑site museum displays finds recovered during excavations and provides context for the visible architecture.
What to See #
- Palace complex: A compact palace and residential complex with multiple rooms and courtyards interpreted as administrative and elite domestic spaces, concentrated on the lower slopes of the site.
- Ballcourt: A long, enclosed sports court used for the Mesoamerican ballgame; the court at Yagul is framed by raised platforms and retaining walls.
- Fortified hill / citadel: A fortified hilltop citadel that crowns the site and provides defensive walls, terraces and lookout platforms above the settlement.

Tips for Visiting Yagul #
