Historic Centre of Oaxaca and Archaeological Site of Monte Albán pairs the colonial city of Oaxaca with the nearby Zapotec ceremonial centre of Monte Albán to illustrate long-term cultural development in the region. The two components together show pre-Hispanic urbanism and Spanish colonial urban and religious architecture.

Monte Albán occupies a dominating hilltop platform with plazas, terraces, tombs and carved monuments associated with Zapotec state formation, while the historic centre of Oaxaca features a Spanish grid, the ornate Santo Domingo church and civic squares. Both are major archaeological and architectural attractions.

Monte Albán was founded in the first millennium BCE and served as a regional capital for many centuries; the colonial city developed from the 16th century after the Spanish conquest, when convents, churches and civic institutions were established. The sites document distinct cultural phases over a long period.

Oaxaca city lies in a highland valley in southern Mexico; Monte Albán sits on a low mountain ridge overlooking the city to the west, a short drive from the historic centre.

• Oaxaca city’s historic centre (the city’s UNESCO area) is compact and walkable from the main bus station and hotels along Calle Macedonio Alcalá. Intercity buses (ADO and others) and flights arrive to Oaxaca; from the city centre most historic sights are reached on foot.

• The Monte Albán archaeological site lies about 8-10 km west of Oaxaca city centre and is reached by taxi or colectivo minibuses that depart from points in the city (the ride is roughly 15-25 minutes by road).

• Visit Monte Albán in the cooler hours - early morning or late afternoon - to avoid the midday heat and to get the best light for viewing the terraces and long sightlines across the valley.
