Sierra Madre de Oaxaca Mountains

The Sierra Madre de Oaxaca is a major mountain range in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, forming part of the southern Mexican highlands. It comprises rugged highlands and valleys and is an important physiographic region within Oaxaca.

The range includes densely forested slopes, river valleys and high-elevation plateaus that support a variety of ecosystems and agricultural practices. Numerous indigenous communities live across the range and maintain distinct languages and cultural traditions.

Geographically the range runs through central and northern parts of Oaxaca and forms part of the complex mountain systems of southern Mexico, influencing local climate and river systems.

• Cultural landscape: Contains highland regions inhabited by indigenous Mixe, Zapotec and other groups with distinct local cultures.

The Sierra Madre de Oaxaca stretches across Oaxaca state. Common entry points are the city of Oaxaca de Juárez (for the northern slopes and cultural sites), and coastal towns for access to lower valleys. From Oaxaca city, many smaller roads and bus routes climb into the mountains toward towns such as Huautla de Jiménez or Ixtlán de Juárez; hire a local driver or guide for remote routes.

• Hire a local guide when planning multi-day treks-many trails cross community land and river crossings can be deceptively difficult.
• Aim for October-March for dry-weather trekking in higher zones, and be prepared for altitude and rain even in summer at higher passes.
