Witwatersrand
Mountains Gold-rich ridge hosting Johannesburg and major mining history
A low east-west ridge across Gauteng, the Witwatersrand hosts Johannesburg and South Africa’s historic goldfields. Visitors explore mining heritage at sites and museums, and urban attractions built atop the ridge’s gold economy.
The Witwatersrand is an east-west trending ridge and geological feature in Gauteng province, South Africa, that underlies Johannesburg and several surrounding urban areas. It is best known as the site of extensive gold-bearing conglomerate reefs that were discovered in the late 19th century.
The ridge’s gold discoveries around 1886 triggered a major mining boom and the rapid expansion of towns and cities, including the founding and growth of Johannesburg. Much of the region is now heavily urbanised, with mining heritage sites and portions of both active and decommissioned mines.
Over time the Witwatersrand has been central to South Africa’s mining industry and economic development, and its geology continues to be of scientific and industrial interest. The urbanised crest and surrounding suburbs form part of the country’s largest metropolitan area.
The ridge lies across Gauteng province and is immediately associated with Johannesburg and other dense urban centres in the Highveld region.
- Gold deposits: The area beneath the ridge contains world-class gold deposits that drove rapid urban and economic growth after discoveries in the late 19th century.
