Sterkfontein is a fossil-bearing cave complex and archaeological site in Gauteng, South Africa, and forms part of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. It is one of the world’s most important sites for early hominin fossils.

Excavations at Sterkfontein have recovered numerous hominin remains, including key Australopithecus specimens and other fauna that have informed research on human evolution; some finds date to several million years old. The site has been excavated since the early 20th century and remains an active research location.

The caves and associated interpretation facilities receive visitors through guided tours that explain the excavation history, major finds and their scientific significance. The site is located near Krugersdorp, within the broader World Heritage area northwest of Johannesburg.

The Sterkfontein Caves (Cradle of Humankind) lie northwest of Johannesburg near Krugersdorp. The site is most easily reached by car from Johannesburg - expect roughly 45-60 minutes’ driving (about 40-60 km depending on start point).

There are also organized day tours from Johannesburg and Pretoria that include transfers; on-site facilities and parking are available at the visitor centre next to the caves.
