Wikala of al-Ghuri

The Wikala of al-Ghuri is a late Mamluk-period commercial complex in historic Cairo erected by Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri in the early 16th century (around 1504). It served as a combined caravanserai and commercial building on a principal medieval street.

The building presents a monumental stone and brick facade onto the historic urban fabric and an internal commercial layout organized around a central courtyard; the structure originally housed storage and market activity at street level with lodging and ancillary functions on upper floors. Architectural details and the urban setting on the medieval street are the primary attractions for people interested in Islamic Cairo’s commercial architecture.

Commissioned by Sultan al-Ghuri of the Mamluk sultanate in the early 1500s, the wikala functioned as a hub for trade and lodging for merchants in the city. Over subsequent centuries the complex has undergone changes in use and conservation; it remains a notable surviving example of late Mamluk urban-commercial architecture.

The wikala stands in Cairo’s historic Islamic district on one of the major medieval streets of the city, within the core area commonly visited for its concentration of Mamluk-era monuments.
