Wikala of Abu al-Rus

Wikala of Abu al-Rus is a traditional caravanserai in Cairo’s medieval commercial quarter, functioning historically to store goods and lodge merchants. It is part of the ensemble of wikalas that supported urban trade in the old city.

The building follows the standard wikala model with ground-floor storage and loading areas and upper rooms around a central courtyard for merchant lodging. Expect practical, straightforward architecture with occasional decorative touches on entrances or windows.

Constructed to facilitate trade by providing secure storage and accommodation, the wikala - like its counterparts - later accommodated commercial workshops and small retailers as the urban economy changed. Surviving examples remain integrated into Cairo’s historic market streets.

Situated in Historic Cairo in Cairo Governorate, the wikala sits amid narrow lanes and adjoining market buildings and is typically accessed on foot from nearby bazaar streets.
