Wikala and sabil-kuttab of Jamal al-Din al-Dhahabi is a multifunctional building in Cairo’s historic center that combines merchant accommodation with a public fountain and a small kuttab (elementary Qur’anic school). The wikala portion provides ground-floor storage and upper-level lodging rooms around a courtyard, while the sabil offers water at street level and the kuttab occupies a compact upper chamber used historically for basic religious instruction. The complex served merchants and the local community by combining trade infrastructure with civic amenities; over time such buildings were often repurposed for shops, workshops and other urban uses while retaining their mixed-function layout.
