Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

The British Isles (United Kingdom & Ireland)

Late winter carries dampness into March, with rapid swings: one week can feel like spring, the next reverts to raw rain and wind; southern England (Brighton, Kent) warms sooner, with daffodils appearing around country lanes. Ferry and train travel are generally reliable but exposed coastal paths in Wales and Scotland can be very rough; pack windproof clothing. This is a useful month for cheaper B&B stays and quieter cities as long as you accept variable weather.

The Low Countries & Northern France (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Northern France)

Early spring in March brings a slow improvement: daytime temperatures climb into the single digits or low teens and bulb fields near Lisse (Keukenhof area) begin to show green shoots later in the month. Rain remains frequent and changeable, so layering and a compact umbrella are useful for exploring Amsterdam’s canals or Bruges’ medieval centre. Crowds are still modest except for the week Keukenhof opens.

Paris & Central France (Paris, Loire Valley, Burgundy, Champagne)

Late winter into March brings tentative warmth and the first hints of spring: daytime highs drift toward 8-13°C and crocuses begin to show in city squares and country lanes. Rain showers increase but are interspersed with sunny spells, good for exploring restored châteaux along the Loire or sipping coffee on a Paris terrace when the sun appears. Shoulder-season prices and fewer crowds make this a practical time for cultural trips.

The Alps (French, Swiss & Italian Alps)

March sees longer days and warmer sun-angles that soften lower slopes; major resorts still have good cover and spring-ski conditions appear, especially above 1,800-2,000 m. Valley mornings can be frosty while sunny afternoons invite lighter layers-great for photographers chasing alpine light-and crampons for icy paths are useful. Shoulder-season deals begin to appear for late-March stays, but avalanche risk requires attention if venturing off marked trails.

Mediterranean Coast & Islands (French Riviera, Liguria & Catalonia; Corsica & Balearics)

March brings rapidly lengthening days and temperatures often reaching 13-18°C; seaside promenades become pleasant and seasonal restaurants re-open. Stronger weather variability occurs in the western Mediterranean-squalls and wind events (tramontana in Catalonia) can make sea crossings choppy-so check ferry schedules. Shoulder-season hotel rates are favourable and urban sightseeing is comfortable before the summer rush.

Atlantic France & Northern Iberia (Brittany, Bordeaux, Basque Country, Galicia & Northern Portugal)

March tends to become drier and slightly warmer as spring approaches-the Atlantic influence moderates to daytime highs of 10-15°C-though occasional storms still occur. This is an attractive time for wine-country visits near Bordeaux and early spring blossoms in Brittany. Packing layers and a good rain jacket is wise, especially for seaside promenades and cliff-top walks.

Iberian Interior & Southern Spain & Portugal (Madrid, Andalusia, Extremadura, Algarve)

March quickly warms across the peninsula with inland highs moving into the mid-teens and southern coasts pleasant in the high teens; almond and orange blossoms are widespread in Andalusia. This is a superb time for sightseeing in Seville or Lisbon before the strong summer heat, though occasional spring showers occur. Daylight grows rapidly-bring a mix of light layers and a waterproof for sudden showers.
