West Point Travel Guide

Situated on a bend in the Hudson River to the north of New York City, West Point is the base of the United States Military Academy, the oldest continuously occupied military post in the country. The town of West Point is quite small although spread out along the west bank of the Hudson. Many tourists are also drawn to the Appalachian Trail and nearby Bear Mountain to the south.

West Point stretches back to Independence when George Washington selected the site after which the fortifications were designed in 1778. Its strategic position located above the Hudson River was vital for controlling river traffic.

Apart from the huge military presence and various buildings, museums and monuments dedicated to the academy, West Point is also a popular tourist spot for hikers. The historic Appalachian Trail goes right through Bear Mountain State Park to the south.
