West Falkland
Island Second-largest Falkland Island with rugged hills and sheep farms
The larger of the two main islands in the western Falklands, West Falkland has rugged moorland, sheep farms, and coastal inlets. Visitors come for remote wildlife-penguins, seabirds-and fishing expeditions, often arriving by small aircraft or ferry.
West Falkland is one of the two principal islands in the Falkland Islands archipelago, lying to the west of East Falkland and separated from it by Falkland Sound. The island is sparsely populated and characterised by rolling hills, coastal inlets and agricultural land.
Settlement is dispersed among a few small coastal villages and farmsteads that serve sheep farming and local fisheries; Port Howard and the Fox Bay settlements are two of the larger local communities. Visitors will find remote beaches, birdlife and landscape views rather than developed tourist infrastructure.
Historically the island has been used for pastoral agriculture for well over a century and saw activity during the 1982 South Atlantic conflict, after which it remained under British administration. Land use has remained predominantly extensive grazing with small local services.
West Falkland lies in the South Atlantic Ocean as part of the Falkland Islands group, west of East Falkland and exposed to strong maritime weather; access is typically by boat, small aircraft or inter-island ferry services.
- Rural economy and access: Main activities on the island are pastoral farming and small-scale local services; travel infrastructure is limited and distances between settlements can be significant on unsealed roads.
What to See #
- Port Howard: A small settlement on West Falkland's western coast that functions as one of the island's principal community and service centres for surrounding farms.
- Fox Bay: A pair of settlements on the southeast coast known as Fox Bay East and Fox Bay West, serving sheep farms and local fisheries with basic services and air links to other islands.
How to Get to West Falkland #
Access is usually via domestic flights from Stanley (East Falkland) or by private charter boats; inter-island transport is limited and must be arranged through local operators.
