Weddell Island

Weddell Island is one of the outer islands of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean and ranks among the larger privately held islands in the archipelago. It is sparsely populated and used principally for agricultural and conservation purposes.

The island’s landscape comprises peat and moorland, cliffs and sheltered bays, and it supports seabirds, marine mammals and grazing land used for sheep farming. Visitors who travel there typically come for wildlife observation, fishing and remote walking along coastal tracks.

Settled and used for pastoral activities since European colonisation of the Falklands, the island has retained a low-density rural character with limited infrastructure. Land use has centred on grazing and small-scale local operations.

Weddell Island lies within the Falkland Islands group in the South Atlantic; it is one of many islands off the main islands and is reached only by private boat or chartered flights from the archipelago’s larger settlements.

• Plan your trip for the austral summer (roughly November-March) when sea conditions and weather are generally more favorable for boat travel and outdoor activities.
• Expect minimal tourist infrastructure and low visitor numbers; plan supplies, fuel and flexible timetables because services and weather windows can change quickly.
