Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon
Temple Historic Ayutthaya temple with large chedi and Buddha images
Outside Ayutthaya’s old city, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is known for its large chedi, rows of Buddha statues and a reclining Buddha; visitors combine temple visits with cycling and history tours.
Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is a major Buddhist temple complex on the southern edge of Ayutthaya Historical Park in central Thailand, noted for its prominent chedi and monastic buildings. The temple dates to the Ayutthaya Kingdom and is a frequently visited religious and historic site in the city of Ayutthaya.
The site is dominated by a large, tapering chedi visible from the surrounding plain and a viharn that houses a large reclining Buddha image. Rows of seated Buddha statues line walkways and cloisters; many images have been restored and are regularly dressed in saffron cloth.
Original construction and later enlargements took place during the Ayutthaya period; the complex has undergone restorations after periods of damage as part of the broader conservation of Ayutthaya’s historic monuments. Today it functions as both an active temple and a cultural-historical attraction.
The temple sits just outside the old city island of Ayutthaya, within easy driving distance of the main historical sites and the modern town center.
