Wat Phumin is a temple in Nan province, northern Thailand, best known for its richly painted interior murals and a distinctive cruciform ubosot. It is one of Nan’s most visited religious sites and an important example of northern Thai temple art.

Inside the ubosot visitors see extensive wall paintings that portray religious stories, local scenes and daily life; the composition and style are major attractions for students of Thai mural art. The small complex is easy to explore on foot in a short visit.

Local records and inscriptions indicate the ordination hall dates from the late 16th century, with the murals added later in the 19th century by local artists. The building and its decoration have been conserved and restored at intervals.

Wat Phumin sits within the old town of Nan, close to the Nan River and the historic centre. Nan town is in northern Thailand near the border with Laos and is accessible by road and regional air services.

Wat Phumin is located in the old town of Nan city. From Nan Bus Terminal or Nan Airport take a short tuk‑tuk or taxi into the old city - the temple is within easy walking distance of the town centre, the local market and Nan National Museum (a few minutes on foot).

• Visit Wat Phumin early in the day when the ordination hall is quieter so you can study the famous murals (including the well-known 'whispering lovers' scene) without crowds blocking the interior.
• Look beyond the main hall: the temple complex is compact and the rear and side walls contain murals and details that many visitors miss during a quick stop.
• If possible, ask a local guide or staff at the site for brief context about the murals - a few minutes of explanation will make the imagery and historical references much clearer than viewing them unaided.

Wat Phumin was built in 1596 and has undergone many facelifts since, including a major restoration in 1867 and a complete replacement of the roof in early 2012. It is unusual in that the main building is a bot (ordination hall) laid out in the form of a cross rather than a viharn (assembly hall).

The murals. The interior walls of the bot are the highlight, their vibrant paintings depicting all manner of local life and times, from the arrival of Westerners in Siam to everyday scenes across the province. At the centre of the bot stand four back-to-back Sukhothai-style Buddha images, and the grounds around the temple are beautifully kept.

Visiting. The temple can get crowded with tour groups, when it is difficult to appreciate the murals quietly; an early-morning or late-afternoon visit usually avoids the crush.
